Ramadhan Timeline

Ramadhan Timeline

The first revelation. The most significant event that occured during Ramadan is the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (saw). Prophet Muhammad (saw) was in the cave in Mount Hira when the Angel Jibrael came to him with the first five ayat of Surat Al-Alaq. Allah (swt) says: "Ramadan is the month in which was sent down the Quran as a guide to mankind also clear signs for guidance and judgement." [2:185] "We have indeed revealed it, (Al-Quran) in the night of power." [97:1]

1 A.H. (After Hijra). In the first year after the Hijrah, the Prophet (saw) sent Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib with thirty Muslim riders to Saif al Bahr to with a definite task of intercepting a caravan belonging to Quraish. It was a caravan of 300 people including Abu Jahl bin Hisham. The two parties encountered each other and aligned in preparation for fighting. Majdi bin ‘Amr, on good terms with both sides, happened to be there and managed to prevent an imminent clash.

2 A.H. In the second year of Hijrah the Messenger of Allah set out on the 8th Ramadhan with three hundred and five of his companions mounted on seventy camels. The Prophet (saw) and his companions set out to intercept a caravan of their own goods that had been left in Makkah. It was led by Abu Sufyan, himself, and estimated at 60,000 dinars. They were met by a well equipped army of the nobility of Quraish, intent on putting out the light of Islam. Then the two sides advanced and drew near each other at Badr on Friday morning on the 17th of Ramadhan. Despite being outnumbered three to one and appearing weak and unseasoned, the Muslims defended their faith with a burning desire to protect the Prophet (saw) and meet their Lord through martyrdom. Allah (SWT) gave them a decisive victory at Badr on this day of Ramadhan, that would never to be forgotten.

6 A.H. In 6 A.H., Zaid ibn Haritha was sent to Wadi al-Qura at the head of a detachment to confront Fatimah bint Rabiah, the queen of that area. Fatimah had previously attacked a caravan led by Zaid and had succeeded in plundering its wealth. She was known to be the most protected woman in Arabia, as she hung fifty swords of her close relatives in her home. Fatimah was equally renowned for showing open hostility to Islam. She was killed in a battle against these Muslims in the month of Ramadhan.

8 A.H. By Ramadhan of 8 A H., the treaty of Hudaibiyya had been broken and the Muslim armies had engaged the Byzantines in the North. Muhammad (saw) felt the need to strike a fatal blow to Kufr in the Arabian Peninsula and conquer the city of Mecca. Now the time had come to purify the Kaabah of nakedness and abomination. The Prophet (saw) set out with an army having more armed men than Al-Madinah had ever seen before. People were swelling the army's ranks as it moved toward Makkah. The determination of the believers became so awesome that the city of Makkah was conquered without a battle, on the 20th of Ramadhan. This was one of the most important dates in Islamic history for after it, Islam was firmly entrenched in the Arabian Peninsula. During the same month and year, after smashing the idols of Makkah, detachments were sent to the major centers of polytheism and al-Lat, Manat and Suwa, some of the greatest idols of Arabia, were destroyed.

Such was the month of Ramadhan in the time of the Prophet (saw). It was a time of purification, enjoining the good, forbidding evil, and striving hard with one's life and wealth. After the death of the Prophet (saw), the Muslims under the Khilafah carried on this tradition. Ramadhan continued to be a time of great trials and crucial events.

92 A.H. Ninety-two years after the Hijrah, Islam had spread across North Africa, Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria. Spain was under the tyrannical rule of King Roderic of the Visigoths. Roderic had forced his six million serfs and persecuted Jews to seek the aid of the Muslims of North Africa. Musa ibn Husair, the Umayyad governor of North Africa, responded by sending his courageous general Tariq ibn Ziyad at the head of 12,000 troops. In Ramadhan of that year, they were confronted with a combined Visigoth army of 90,000 Christians led by Roderic, himself, who was seated on a throne of ivory silver, and precious gems, drawn by white mules. After burning his boats, Tariq motivated the Muslims warning them that and Paradise lay ahead of them and defeat and the sea to the rear. They burst with great enthusiasm and Allah (SWT) manifested a clear victory over the forces of disbelief. Not only were Roderic and his forces completely annihilated, but Tariq and Musa succeeded in liberating whole of Spain, Sicily and parts of France. This was the begining of the Golden Age of Al-Andalus where Muslims ruled for over 700 years.

658 A.H. In the seventh century A.H. the Mongols were sweeping across Asia destroying everything that lay in their path Genghis Khan called himself "the scourge of God sent to punish humanity for their sins". In 617 A.H. Samarkand, Ray, and Hamdan were put to the sword causing more than 700,000 people to be killed or made captive. In 656 A.H. Hulagu, the grandson of Genghis Khan, continued this destruction. Even Baghdad, the leading city of the Muslim world, was sacked. Some estimates say that as many as 1,800,000 Muslims were killed in this awesome carnage. The Christians were asked to eat pork and drink wine openly while the surviving Muslims were forced to participate in drinking bouts. Wine was sprinkled in the masjids and no Adhan (call to prayer) was allowed. In the wake of such a disaster threatening the whole Muslim world, Allah (SWT) raised up from the Mamluks of Egypt, Saifuddin Qutz, who united the Muslim army and met the Mongols at Ain Jalut on Friday, 25 Ramadhan 658 A.H. (6 September 1260 CE). Qutz told his army to wait until they finished the Friday prayers (Jummah Salah), "Do not fight them until it is sunset and the shadows appear and the winds stir, and the preachers and people start to implore Allah for us in their prayers", and thereafter the fighting began. Jullanar, the wife of Qutz, was killed during the battle. He rushed towards her saying, "Oh my beloved one". She told him while uttering her last breath, "Do not say that, and care more for Islam." Her soul left her body after telling her husband that the Jihad for the sake of Allah and Islam is more important than love and personal relations. Qutz stood up saying "Islamah…Islamah". The whole army repeated that word after him until they achieved their victory. Although they were under great pressure, the Muslims with the help of Allah (SWT), cunning strategy and unflinching bravery, crushed the Mongol army and reversed this tidal wave of horror. The Muslims immediately started to chase the Mongolians, and Qutz entered Damascus five days after the Ain Jalout battle. The chase continued to Halab and when the Mongolians felt the approach of the Muslims they left behind the Muslim prisoners. In the period of a month the Muslims were able to restore Belad El-Sham entirely from the hands of the Tartars and the Mongolians.

682 A.H. In the year 682 A.H. (Ramadan, 4th July 1187 C.E.) that Salahuddin Ayyubi with the Muslim Mujahideen of the Khilafah fought one of the most important battles in the history of Islam. The Muslims on this day, in one single day, virtually routed all local Christian forces capable of defending the Crusaders establishment in the Near East. Facing no resistance, Salahuddin took his time to reach the city of Jerusalem on 9th October, 1187 C.E. (Christain Era), a Friday, and the Holy city was purified.

This was the spirit of Ramadhan that enabled our righteous forefathers to face seemingly impossible challenges. It was a time of intense activity, spending the day in the saddle and the night in prayer whilst calling upon Allah (SWT) for His mercy and forgiveness. Today, the Muslim world is faced with disunity, colonisation, widespread corruption and economic deprivation. Surely we are in need of the Khilafah so we as believers can walk in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet (saw), the illustrious Sahabah, Tariq ibn Ziyad, Qutuz, Salahuddin and the countless heroes of Islam. Surely we should be of the believers who are unafraid of the threats of the Kuffar, yet kind and humble amongst ourselves.

May Allah (SWT) make us those generation of Muslims who can carry Islam to all corners of the globe and may He give us the strength to undertake all hardships in the pursuit of His (swt) pleasure. Ameen.

Ramadhan and Imaan

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Ramadan and Eemaan

by Imâm al-Madîna al-Munawarrah 'Alî Abd-ur-Rahmân al-Hudhaifî

Al-Jum‘ah, Ramadaan 12, 1421 A.H. (December 8, 2000)

All praise is due to Allaah, the Mighty, the Generous. I thank Him and seek for His forgiveness. I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship save Him and that Muhammad r is His servant and messenger. O Allaah! Shower peace and blessings upon him as well as his family and companions.

Brethren in faith, always be conscious of Allaah by doing good deeds and abstaining from forbidden acts for, it is only through fear of Allaah that you can attain prosperity in this world and the pleasure of Allaah in the hereafter.

Fellow Muslims, it should be known to you that acts of worship that Allaah ordained on His servants have two aims:

First: To purify Muslim’s soul in order to make it elligible for dwelling in the everlasting Paradise. Allaah says:

( قد أفلح من تزكى وذكر اسم ربه فصلى )

“Indeed, whoever purifies himself (by avoiding polytheism and accepting Islamic monotheism) and remembers (glorifies) the name of his Lord and prays will have success.” (Al-A‘laa 87:14-15).

Second: To make all the mankind benefit therefrom. This is evident in this verse:

( كنتم خير أمة أخرجت للناس تأمرون بالمعروف وتنهون عن المنكر وتؤمنون بالله )

“You are the best of peoples ever raised up for the mankind; you enjoin all that is good and forbid all that is evil and you believe in Allaah.” (Aal ‘Imraan 3:110)

Ibn Katheer, while commentig on this verse said that Muslims are the most beneficial to the mankind by virtue of their enjoining good, forbidding evil and belief in Allaah. In a Hadeeth, the Messenger of Allaah saws said:

“Mankind are Allaah’s dependents and the dearest of all His servants to Him are the most beneficial to His dependents.”

Furthermore, abstaining from forbidden acts drives away impending evils and puts an end to continous ones. Allaah says:

( إن الله يدافع عن الذين آمنوا إن الله لا يحب كل خوان كفور )

“Truly, Allaah defends those who believe. Verily, Allaah loves not any treacherous ingrate to Allaah.” (Al-Hajj 22:38.)

Ramadaan is a month of blessing and good deeds. Allaah honored it and blessed its nights and days rather, every hour of it. He ordaines fasting during its days and enjoins prayers and supplication during its nights. He made it a period in which good deeds earn multiple reward. He makes a ‘Umrah that is performed in this month as equivalent in reward to a Hajj performed with the Messenger of Allaah r. It is in this noble month that many great events occured in the history of Islam like the victory of Eemaan over Kufr in the Battle of Badr, the conquest of Makkah, Battle of ‘Ayn Jaaloot and other decisive battles.

During this month, Muslims by their fasting have spiritual gains and avert retributions that usually accompany the commitment of forbidden and destructive acts. This meaning is manifested in the verse:

( يا أيها الذين آمنوا كتب عليكم الصيام كما كتب على الذين من قبلكم لعلكم تتقون )

“O you who believe! Observing fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you that you may become pious.” (Al-Baqarah 2:183).

Among the merits of this month also is that it puts demarcation between one and Satan, so that he is no more capable of doing what he easily does in other months. This fact is explained by the Messenger of Allaah saws when he said:

“When Ramadan comes, gates of Paradise are opened, gates of Hell are closed and devils are chained.”

You are therefore obliged dear brethren, to praise Allaah for this great favor with your hearts, tongues and limbs and thank Him for all good things that He facilitates for you. Allaah says:

( قل بفضل الله وبرحمته فبذلك فليفرحوا هو خير مما يجمعون )

“Say: ‘In the Bounty of Allaah and in His Mercy therein let them rejoice.’ That is better than what (the wealth) they amass.” (Yoonus 10:58)

Endeavor to do as many good deeds as possible during this blessed month and always keep yourself busy with the glorification of Allaah and seeking for His forgiveness. Observe your obligatory prayers regularly in the mosque with the congregation, pay Zakaah out of the wealth that Allaah has given you and spend in voluntary charity and protect your fasting from forbidden things such as backbiting, slandering and the like. The Messenger of Allaah saws said:

“Whoever does not abstain from falsehood in saying and deed and acts of ignorance, Allaah is in no need of his abstention from food and drink.” Al-Bukhaaree

I implore you also dear brethren, to observe the fasting of Ramadaan purposely for the sake of Allaah alone. The Messenger of Allaah saws said:

“Whoever observes the fasting of Ramadaan with Eemaan and the hope of getting reward from Allaah, his past sins will be forgiven for him.”

Pleasure of your parents should also be a goal you should work towards always and particularly during this blessed month for Allaah will be pleased with you only when they are pleased with you. Maintain good relationship with your kith and kin, show mercy and compassion to the poor and the orphan and render back the trusts to whom they are due. Maintain good relations with your neighbours for he whom his neighbour is not save from his evils is not regarded as a believer. Ensure that Muslims’ properties, persons and blood are save from your harm for every wrong done to another person shall be atoned for on the Day of Judgement. You should know that this month of fasting has kept you on the path of piety, do not therefore deviate from that path and recommend one another to the truth and patience.

Fellow Muslims, the greatest gift that Allaah gave to His servants during Ramadaan is the Glorious Qur’aan. Allaah says:

( شهر رمضان الذي أنزل فيه القرآن هدى للناس وبينات من الهدى والفرقان )

“The month of Ramadaan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).” (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

Read the Qur’aan frequently in this month for whoever reads a single letter from the Book of Allaah will have a reward of ten good deeds. Frequent recitation of the Qur’aan blesses a believer and leaves the effect of that blessing on his heart and body. The Qur’aan is the guide to all good and the preventer of all evil. Human soul cannot be on the right path unless it is nourished with the Qur’aan and all corruptions that occurs in the human mind are caused by keeping away from the Glorious Book. People of Qur’aan are those who work by it even if they do not memorise it. The Qur’aan is Allaah’s Miracle that addresses the human intellect in all ages and all places with various proofs and complete certainty in order to make it submit to the realities of faith. Therefore, nourish your souls and purify your limbs with the Qur’aan. Abide by the do’s and don’ts of this Book and ponder over its marvelous verses that Allaah may open the blessings of the heaven and earth for you and admit you into the Everlasting Paradise.

Fellow Muslims, advance towards acts that will make you win the pleasure of your Lord. He says:

( ولكل وجهة هو موليها فاستبقا الخيرات أينما تكونوا يأت بكم الله جميعا إن الله على كل شيء قدير )

“For every nation there is a direction to which they face (in their prayers). So hasten towards all that is good.Wheresoever you may be, Allaah will bring you together (on the Day of Resrrection). Truly, Allaah is Able to do all things.” (Al-Baqarah 2:148)

Dear brethren, it is part of the perfectness of your fasting to observe suprerogatory prayers like Salaatu Taraaweeh. Aboo Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah saws said:

“Whoever observes night prayers during Ramadaan with Eemaan and seeking reward from Allaah will have his past sins forgiven for him.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Fellow Muslims, let us get prepared for the day of departure from this world for none of us knows when death will come and none of us knows what is going to be his fate in front of His Lord.

Surah Ghashiyah Ahmed al-Ajmy

Verse No Pickthall
88:0 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
88:1 Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming ?
88:2 On that day (many) faces will be downcast,
88:3 Toiling, weary,
88:4 Scorched by burning fire,
88:5 Drinking from a boiling spring,
88:6 No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit
88:7 Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.
88:8 In that day other faces will be calm,
88:9 Glad for their effort past,
88:10 In a high Garden
88:11 Where they hear no idle speech,
88:12 Wherein is a gushing spring,
88:13 Wherein are couches raised
88:14 And goblets set at hand
88:15 And cushions ranged
88:16 And silken carpets spread.
88:17 Will they not regard the camels, how they are created ?
88:18 And the heaven, how it is raised ?
88:19 And the hills, how they are set up ?
88:20 And the earth, how it is spread ?
88:21 Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer,
88:22 Thou art not at all a warder over them.
88:23 But whoso is averse and disbelieveth,
88:24 Allah will punish him with direst punishment.
88:25 Lo! unto Us is their return
88:26 And Ours their reckoning.

Quran Surah Qiyamah by Fahd Al Kanderi

Verse No Pickthall
75:0 In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
75:1 Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection;
75:2 Nay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true).
75:3 Thinketh man that We shall not assemble his bones ?
75:4 Yea, verily. We are Able to restore his very fingers!
75:5 But man would fain deny what is before him.
75:6 He asketh: When will be this Day of Resurrection ?
75:7 But when sight is confounded
75:8 And the moon is eclipsed
75:9 And sun and moon are united,
75:10 On that day man will cry: Whither to flee!
75:11 Alas! No refuge!
75:12 Unto thy Lord is the recourse that day.
75:13 On that day man is told the tale of that which he hath sent before and left behind.
75:14 Oh, but man is a telling witness against himself,
75:15 Although he tender his excuses.
75:16 Stir not thy tongue herewith to hasten it.
75:17 Lo! upon Us (resteth) the putting together thereof and the reading thereof.
75:18 And when We read it, follow thou the reading;
75:19 Then lo! upon Us (resteth) the explanation thereof.
75:20 Nay, but ye do love the fleeting Now
75:21 And neglect the Hereafter.
75:22 That day will faces be resplendent,
75:23 Looking toward their Lord;
75:24 And that day will other faces be despondent,
75:25 Thou wilt know that some great disaster is about to fall on them.
75:26 Nay, but when the life cometh up to the throat
75:27 And men say: Where is the wizard (who can save him now) ?
75:28 And he knoweth that it is the parting;
75:29 And agony is heaped on agony;
75:30 Unto thy Lord that day will be the driving.
75:31 For he neither trusted, nor prayed.
75:32 But he denied and flouted.
75:33 Then went he to his folk with glee.
75:34 Nearer unto thee and nearer,
75:35 Again nearer unto thee and nearer (is the doom).
75:36 Thinketh man that he is to be left aimless ?
75:37 Was he not a drop of fluid which gushed forth ?
75:38 Then he became a clot; then (Allah) shaped and fashioned
75:39 And made of him a pair, the male and female.
75:40 Is not He (Who doeth so) Able to bring the dead to life ?

Quran and Hadith on Dua

Compiled by Mutmainaa

"Truly, Allah loves those who repent, and He loves those who cleanse themselves."
[Al-Baqarah 2:222]

"There is nothing more dear to Allah Ta’ala than a servant making dua to him."
[at Tirmidhi]

"The person who does not ask from Allah Ta’ala, Allah Ta’ala becomes angry with him."
[at Tirmidhi, Ahmad]

"The dua of a Muslim for his brother (in Islam) in his absence is readily accepted, an angel is appointed to his side, whenever he makes a beneficial dua for his brother the appointed angel says "aameen and may you also be blessed with the same".

[Sahih Muslim]

"Dua is the essence of Ibadah (worship)."

[at Tirmdhi, Ahmad]

"If you ask, ask Allah and if you seek help, seek help from Allah."

[at Tirmdhi, Ahmad]

"O my servants, were the first of you and last of you, the human of you and jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request from me, and were I to give everyone what they requested, that would not decrease what I have anymore than a needle decreases the sea if put into it."
[Sahih Muslim]

"When a person dies, all his actions come to an end with the exception of three:
1) Sadaqa Jaariyaa recurring charity,

2) Knowledge from which benefit continues to be reaped,

3) And the prayers of his pious children for him."

[Sahih al-Bukhari]

""The invocation of any one of you is granted [by Allah] as long as he does not show impatience by saying "I have invoked Allah but my request has not been answered."
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Muslim]

"And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks Allah's forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

[surah an-Nisa; 4:110]

"And declare the freedom of your Rubb from imperfection beginning with His praise, and ask His forgiveness. Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and Who forgives."
[surah 110:3]

"Any muslim who supplicates to Allah in a Du'a which contains no sin breaking of kinship, Allah will give him one of three things: either his Du`a will be immediately answered or, it will be saved for him in the hereafter, or it will turn away an equivalent amount of evil (from him)" The companions said "so we will ask for more" he replied, "Allah is more [generous]."
[at-Tirmidhi, Ahmad]

"Ask forgiveness for your sin and also for the believing men and women"

[Surah 47:19]

"The Prophet, salAllahu alaiyhi wasalam, said to him while Ibn-Abbas was riding behind him on the same mount;

"young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]:

Be mindful of Allah and you will find him in front of you. If you ask, ask only Allah and if you seek help, seek help only from Allah. And know that if all the nations were to gather together to benefit you, they would benefit you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you, and if they gather together to harm you, they would harm you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages are dry."
[at-Tirmidhi]

"Ask and you will be given, ask you will be given"

[at-Tirmidhi]

"And when my servants ask you concerning me, [tell them] I am indeed near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls."

[surah al Baqarah; 2:187]

"And your lord said, invoke me and I will respond to your invocation."

[Surah 40:60]

"Invoke your lord with humility and in secrecy, for God loveth not those who trespass beyond bounds."

[Surah 7:55]

"So invoke Allah making your worship pure for him."

[Surah 40:14]

"Invoke Him only, making your religion sincere to him."

[Surah 7: 29]

"the Prophet, salAllahu alayhi wasalam, was asked "which Du'a is more heard (by Allah)?" The Prophet, salAllahu alayhi wasalam, said, "The Du'a during the last part of the night and after the Fard prayers."

[at-Tirmidhi, 3421]

"Abu Hurayrah (radiAllahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah, salAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said,

"When someone of you prays, let him not say, 'O Allah forgive me if that is Your wish.' But let him be firm in conviction and cherish a great hope and Allah does not consider anything too great which He is able to grant."

[Sahih al-Bukhari]

"Aisha radhiallaahu anha said, "No believer makes Dua and it is wasted. Either it is granted here in this world or deposited for him in the Hereafter as long as he does not get frustrated."

"Or, Who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him, and Who relieves its suffering, and makes you (making) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) God besides Him? Little it is that ye heed!."

[an-Naml: 62]

"For any one among you, if the door of acceptance of du`a is opened, then the doors of His Mercy are also opened. The best du`a Allah likes is the one in which the caller asks for the goodness of this world and the goodness of the next world."

[at-Tirmidhi, al-Hakim]

"Du'a is a weapon of a believer, a pillar of religion, and a light of the heavens and the earth."
[al-Hakim]

"Nothing prevents predestination except Du'a, and nothing stretches the age except righteousness."

[at-Tirmidhi]

"Do not feel hopeless with Du'a, since nobody is to be annihilated with Du'a."

[ibn Hiban]

"Abu Darda' (radiAllahu anhu) reported:

[Muslim, 1494]

"Abu Darda' (RadiAllahu anhu) reported:

The Messenger of Allah, SalAllahu alayhi wasalam, said,

"The supplication of a Muslim for his (Muslim) brother in his absence will certainly be answered. Everytime he makes a supplication for good for his brother, the angel appointed for this particular task says: `A meen! May it be for you, too."

[Muslim, 1495]

"And ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women"

[Surah 47:19]

"I heard Allah's Apostle saying." By Allah! I ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day."

[Sahih al-Bukhari, 8:319]

"Narrated abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anha)

Allah's Apostle said, "For every prophet there is one (special invocation (that will not be rejected) with which he appeals (to Allah), and I want to keep such an invocation for interceding for my followers in the Hereafter."

[Sahih al-Bukhari, 8:317e]

An-Numan bin Bashir (radiAllahu anhum) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:

"Verily, Supplication is worship."

[al-Arba'a (the four), at-Tirmidhi]

abu Hurairah(radiAllahu anhum) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:
"Nothing is more honorable (most liked) before Allah (Ta'ala) than Supplication."

[at-Tirmidhi, ibn Hibban and al-Hakim]

"Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before us."

[surah 21:90]

"Dhan-Nun (Jonah), when he went off in anger, and imagined that We shall not punish him. But he cried through the darkness (saying): La ilaha illa Anta (none has the, right to be worshiped but You) Glorified be You, Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers."

[surah 21:87]

Anas (radiAllahu anhum) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:
"A supplication made between the Adhan and Iqama is not rejected."

[an-Nasai and ibn Hibban]

abu Hurairah(radiAllahu anhum) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:
"There is an hour on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while offering Salat (prayer) and asks something from Allah (Ta'ala), then Allah (Ta'ala) will definitely meet his demand." And he (the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands."

[Sahih al-Bukhari]

abu Hurairah(radiAllahu anhum) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:
"The nearest a slave can be to his Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer) is when he is prostrating, so invoke (supplicate) Allah (Ta'ala) much."

[Sahih Muslim]

abu Ummamah (radiAllahu anhum) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) was asked:

"O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is heard (by Allah (Ta'ala), he said the end of the night and at the end of the obligatory Salat (prayer)."

[at-Tirmidhi]

"Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (Ta'ala)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler)."

[al Bayhaqi]

"Is not He Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generation after generation. Is there any god with Allah? Little is that you remember."

[surah 27:62]

There are deep sighs of remorse and sorrow echoed from every corner of the Muslim World. Frustration and anger at the attitude and behaviour of so-called “Islamic states” has only added fuel to the already blazing fire. No matter what we do and how much we speak, Allah Ta’ala is fully aware of the plight and condition of every soul. Everything happens only with His permission and will.

In every crisis RasulAllah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam)'s total effort and focus was directed towards dua. The most glaring example was during the battle of Badr, when RasulAllah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) spent the entire night in fervent dua until the Sahaba (radiAllahu anhum) had to stop him. Dua is certainly the most lethal weapon we have and no crisis or catastrophe should deter us a single degree from this course. The benefits of dua are innumerable and its effects and fruits will be seen in the Hereafter also. However, acceptance of dua is dependant on two crucial aspects viz. pure halal sustenance and total unconditional abstention from sin.

Taqwah in Ramadan

Taqwah in Ramadan

By Muzammil H. Siddiqi

(O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint.) (Al-Baqarah 2:183)

(O ye who believe! fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.) (Aal `Imran 3:102)

“Every deed of the child of Adam is for him except fasting; it is for Me and I shall reward it. The (bad) breath of the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasing to Allah than the perfume of musk.” (Al-Bukhari)

The purpose of fasting is not to make us hungry and thirsty, or to deprive us some of our comfort and conveniences. The real purpose of fasting is that we learn taqwa. Taqwa is highly emphasized in the Qur’an and Sunnah. There are more than 158 verses in the Qur’an on taqwa, and there are hundreds of hadiths on this subject. Taqwa is Islam itself. It is the sum total of all Islamic values and virtues. If one has taqwa one has achieved everything. Taqwa is the consciousness of Allah. It is to do one’s best efforts to live by His commands and to avoid His prohibitions. The Qur’an has used the word taqwa to mean consciousness of Allah, fear of Allah, worship of Allah, sincerity in faith, and avoidance of disobedience to Allah.

Fasting builds the character of taqwa if it is done in the right way. How does fasting build the character of taqwa? Let us look at some of the things that a fasting person is supposed to do, and see how they are related to the concept and spirit of taqwa.

1. Unlike prayers, charity, and pilgrimage, fasting is an invisible act. Only Allah and the person who is fasting know whether he or she is fasting or not. One may quietly eat or drink something and no one will notice and no one can find out. However, the fasting person has made this commitment for the sake of Allah and he or she wants to guard the purity of his or her fast for the sake of Allah. Fasting thus teaches sincerity, and it helps a person learn to live by the principles of his or her faith regardless whether others know or do not know. This is the very purpose and essence of taqwa.

2. Food and sex are two needs and desires that are essential for human survival and growth, but they can become easily corruptive and disruptive if they are not properly controlled and disciplined. Taqwa requires observing the rules of Allah when one eats and when one enjoys sexual relations. Fasting teaches how to control and discipline these desires.

3. The world is full of temptations. It takes a lot of discipline to say “no” to something that is very tempting but not good for us. During fasting we learn how to say “no” to things that are otherwise permissible and good, but are forbidden during fasting. When one learns how to say “no” to that which is generally permissible, then one can easily control oneself to avoid that which is forbidden. This is the spirit of taqwa.

4. People generally care for themselves and their families, but they often ignore the needs of others. Those who have do not even feel the pain and suffering of those who are hungry, homeless, and living in poverty. Through fasting we taste—to some extent—the pain and suffering of those who are poor and destitute. Fasting teaches empathy and sympathy, and it takes away some of our selfishness and self-centeredness. This is the spirit of taqwa.

5. When Muslims fast together in the month of Ramadan, it builds an atmosphere of virtues, brotherhood and sisterhood. We come closer to our Creator and we also come closer to each other. Unity, peace, harmony, brotherhood and sisterhood are the fruits of taqwa. In Ramadan we enjoy these fruits as we grow in taqwa.

There are some important things that we should do during Ramadan to take better advantage of this month and to achieve its real purpose, namely, taqwa. These are some reminders and they are all taken from the guidelines given to us in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

1. Niyyah (intention): Remind yourself again and again that you are fasting in obedience to Allah. Be sincere in your intention. You want Allah to accept your fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

Whosoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and seeking Allah’s reward, all his past sins will be forgiven.” (Al-Bukhari)

2. Sunnah: Observe the Sunnah in fasting. Take the sahur meal a little before dawn and end your fast at sunset. Observe all the rules of fasting.

3. Wara’ (avoiding everything haram or makruh): Be conscious to have halal food, halal income, halal relations. Avoid watching bad TV programs, videos, movies, etc., always, but especially during this month. Keep your body and mind very clean. Avoid wasting your time in useless things and pursuits.

4. Qur’an: Spend more time with the Qur’an. Read Qur’an every day. Try to finish the whole Qur’an at least one time during this month in your own personal reading. Read some Hadith and the books of seerah.

5. Prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah: Pray on time and observe all Prayers. Do not ignore the Tarawih Prayers. Make more supererogatory prayers. Do as much worship as you can. Do more dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and du`aa’ (supplication) for yourself and for others. Make tawbah (repentance) and istighfar (request for Allah’s forgiveness) as much as you can. This is the best time for devotion and seeking Allah’s forgiveness. Seek the Night of Qadar by special devotion during the last 10 nights of this month.

6. Zakah, charity, and generosity: Be very charitable and generous. Give more and more to help the poor and needy, and to help good social and community projects. Be good to your friends and neighbors also. Let your non-Muslim neighbors and co-workers know that this is your blessed and sacred time.

7. Good behavior and relations with others. Try to be extra kind and courteous during this month. Forget your quarrels and disputes. Reconcile and forgive. Do not get involved in backbiting, lying, cheating, and anything that is wrong. Be very good to Muslims and to all human beings.

8. Reflection: Think, reflect, and plan to improve the moral and spiritual condition of your own self and your family. Think about any wrong things and sins you may have been doing and correct yourself. Think about any deficiencies you have in your Islamic observances and plan to change yourself. Think what you can do for the Ummah and for humanity to make this world a better place for everyone.

It is reported in the Bible that the Children of Israel used to fast, but they complained to their prophet that they were not receiving God’s blessings. God was not answering their prayers. It is reported that God revealed to His prophet:

“Why have we fasted, and thou seest it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and thou takest no knowledge of it?” Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high.

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, Here I am. (Isaiah 58:3-9)

May Allah help us to take full benefit of fasting in this blessed month of Ramadan. May He keep us on the right path and bless us now and always. Ameen!

Sabr or Shukr ~ The Worry Stops Here

Sabr or Shukr ~ The Worry Stops Here

Aasiyah, the wife of Fir'own. Her Eeman in Allah thrived under the shadow of someone that said, "I am your Lord, Most High!" When news reached Fir'own of his wife's Eeman he beat her and commanded his guards to beat her. They took her out in the scalding noon heat, tied her hands and feet and beat her perpetually. Who did she turn to? She turned to Allah! She prayed, "My lord, build for me a home with you in Paradise and save me from Fir'own and his deeds and save me from the transgressive people."

It was narrated that when she said this, the sky opened for her and she saw her home in Paradise. She smiled. The guards watched astonished, she's being tortured and she smiles? Frustrated, Fir'own commanded a boulder to be brought and dropped on Aasiyah, to crush her to death. But Allah took her soul before the boulder was brought and she became an example for all the believing men and women till the end of time:

[And Allah has set forth an example for those who believe: the wife of Fir'own (Pharaoh) - when she said, "My Lord, Build for me a home with You in Paradise, and save me from Fir'own and his deeds, and save me from the transgressive-disbelieving people.] -Tahreem 66/11

In the hadith of Jibreel, when he came to the Prophet (SAW) and asked him about Islam, Eeman, and Ihasan, the Prophet SAW said about Eeman, "Eeman is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messengers, the Final Day, and the divine decree, the good and the bad thereof." For the past few weeks we have been reflecting on this hadith, only glimpses. Today we shall conclude with the last article of Eeman: to believe in the Divine decree, the good and the bad thereof.

As you and I travel though life we find ourselves in one of two situations. Either something good is happening in our lives and in which case - as Muslims- our role is to thank Allah for the blessing. Or something bad is happening to us, something we dislike and our role here is to be patient (Sabr). This is the formula for a happy life, a life cruising towards the pleasure of Allah. Sabr or Shukr, the worry stops here.

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "Strange is the affair of the Mu'min (the believer), verily all his affairs are good for him. If something pleasing befalls him he thanks (Allah) and it becomes better for him. And if something harmful befalls him he is patient (Saabir) and it becomes better for him. And this is only for the Mu'mmin "

Ibn Al-Jowzee said, "If this Dunya was not a station of tests it would not be filled with sicknesses and filth. If life were not about hardship, then the Prophets and the pious would have lived the most comfortable of lives. Nay, Adam suffered test after test until he left the Dunya. Nuh cried for 300 years. Ibrahim was thrown into a pit of fire and later told to slaughter his son. Ya'qub cried until he became
blind. Musa challenged Fir'own and was tested by his people. Eeasa had no provision except the morsels his disciples provided him with. And Muhammad (SAW) met poverty with patience, his uncle - one of the most beloved relatives to him - was slain and mutilated and his people disbelieved in him ... and the list of Prophets and the pious goes on and on."

What happens to us happens by the will of Allah. It is an article of our Eeman in Qada' and Qadr that we are pleased with Allah's choice, Good or seemingly bad it is all the test of this Dunya. How could we imagine that we shall not be tested when those who were better than us suffered what they suffered. They however came away with the pleasure of Allah, Subhaanahu wa Ta'Aala.

Al Hasan ibn Arafah narrated, "I visited Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal after he was whipped and tortured. I said to him, "O Abu Abdillaaah, you have reached the station of the Prophets!" He said, "Keep quiet. Verily, I saw nothing more than people selling their Deen. And I saw scholars that were with me sell their Faith. So I said to myself, 'Who am I, what am I. What am I going to say to Allah tomorrow when I stand in front of Him and He ask me, "Did you sell your Deen like the others did?" So I looked at the whip and the sword and chose them. And I said, "If I die I shall return to Allah and say: 'I was told to say that one of Your Characteristics was something created but I did not.' After that, it will be up to Him - either to punish me of be Merciful on me."

Al-Hasan ibn Arafah then asked, "Did you feel pain when they whipped you?" He said "Yes, I felt the pain up to 20 lashes then I lost all feeling (They whipped him over eighty times). After it was over I felt no pain and that day I prayed Dhuhr standing."

Al-Hasan ibn Arafah started weeping when he heard what had happened. Imam Ahmad questioned him, "Why are you crying? I did not lose my Eeman. After that why should I care if I lose my life?" They were better than us but this was how they were tested.

Let us discuss some facts about these tests of life, the good and the bad that befalls us:

§ Much of what befalls us - the hard times - is the direct result of ourown sins. Allah Ta'aala says "And whatever misfortune befalls you it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much." - Sura 42/30

Muhammad ibn Seereen used to say when his debts piled up and he felt sad, "I know that the cause of this sadness is a sin I committed over 40 years ago."

§ People understand that when something bad happens it is a test from Allah. But dear Brothers and Sisters, the good things that happen to us are also a test.

Allah ta'aala says [And we tested them with good (blessings) and evil (calamities) in order that they might turn back] - A'raf 7/168

Abd alMalik ibn Ishaq said, "There is no one that is not tested with health and prosperity to measure how thankful he is (Shukr)."

And the Companion - AbdurRahman ibn 'Awf (RA) said, "We were tested with hardship and were patient. And then we were tested with prosperity and we were not patient. Because of this Allah states:

[O ye who believe! Let not your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers.] - Munafiqun 63/9

§ Patience must happen from the beginning, not three days later or one day later, at the first news of the calamity, when it first happens. The Prophet (SAW) said, "Verily patience (is only Sabr when practiced) at the first hit (of news)."

§ There are things that contradict Sabr. Tearing ones shirt, for example, slapping ones face, slapping hands, shaving ones head, and cursing and wailing. Umm Salamah narrates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say, "Any Muslim that says when a calamity befalls him that which Allah commanded him: To Allah we belong and to him we return. O Allah reward me in this calamity and give me better then it - (any Muslim that says this) Allah will grant him better than (that which he lost)." - Muslim

§ These tests and hardships wash our sins. Aisha (Ra) said, "Verily fever sheds sins like a tree sheds leaves."

§ The hardships that befall us distinguish the believers from the insincere. Shumayt ibn Ajlaan said, "The pious and the ungrateful are hidden by health. Yet when calamities befall the two men are separated (by how they react)."

Allah says in the Quran "Alif/Laam/Meem..Do people think that they will be left alone because they say, "We believe," and will not be tested? Indeed We tested those who (lived) before them" Al-Ankaboot 29/1-3

Towards Sabr

Ali (RA) said, "Verily Sabr is to Eeman what the head is to the body. When the head is cut off, the body falls. (He then raised his voice) Verily there is no Eeman for he who has no Sabr (patience)."

There are three types of Sabr that the Muslim must have:

1. Sabr in the obedience of Allah. For example, One must be patient and perform their Fajr at it's time.

2. Sabr in not disobeying Allah. Like someone might say, "I just have to insult him." No, we are command by He who gave us our tongues to not follow the whispers of Shaytaan. And we must have Sabr in not disobeying Allah.

3. Sabr in what Allah Decrees on us. For example, if our child was to pass away we should be patient and seek the reward of Allah in our patience and say only that which is pleasing to Allah.

There are two keys. If we understand them we shall open the door to Sabr in our lives:

The First Key: know that our souls, families and wealth do not belong to us, they belong to Allah. He gave it to us as a loan to see what we would do with it. And when he takes it back He is taking back what belongs to Him. We had nothing before the blessing and we'll have nothing after it. We did not create the blessing from nothing, so how can we claim that it belongs to us.

The Second Key: We are on a journey and the destination is the hereafter - Paradise or Hell. We shall be leaving the Dunya behind us and we'll come back to Allah by ourselves. This is what needs our focus. And if Allah is pleased with us then no worry. If He is not pleased with us then all worry.

Let me draw your attention to a verse. Listen carefully. Allah revealed: "Guard strictly the (five obligatory) prayers, especially the middle Salah and stand before Allah in obedience."- alBaqarah 2/238

The verses before this deal with divorce. The verses after it deal with divorce. Why was this verse placed in the middle?

The Ulama' have suggested, Wa Allaahu a'lam, that in the hard times that a person goes through (especially in a divorce) they should not forget the remembrance of Allah, the Salah. And it is that Salah coupled with Sabr that will pull them through.

"O you who believe! Seek Help in Patience and Salah. Truly, Allah is with those that are patient."-Baqarah 2/153

In conclusion, Allah ta'ala wants us to give pass on the following good news:

[And give good news to the patient who, when afflicted with calamity say, "Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return."/They are those on whom the Salawat (i.e. the blessing and forgiveness) of their Lord is upon them, and who shall receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones" -Baqarah 2/157

Allah promised anyone who wants to work on his or her patience three things: Forgiveness, Mercy, and guidance. Who could ask for more?
