6.1 The Fast of Ramadhan

Fasting, sawm, during the sacred month of Ramadhan is also a Pillar of Islam. This fast is a confirmed fard upon every [legally] competent Muslims. To deny this is to commit kufr. To neglect to fast, without excuse, is to commit a wrongdoing, fisq. However, of this neglect is die to denial of the need to fast, then this is kufr [and not merely fisq].

Imams Bukhari and Muslim have related on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

“The children of Adam will find increase for their good deeds, from ten to seven hundred times over, except for a fast which is undertaken solely for Me, and I am its reward.”
