Islamic Concept of Happiness

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Islamic Concept of Happiness

The concept of happiness in the Islamic culture is to acquire the pleasure of Allah (swt), keeping in mind that it is the ultimate objective man works diligently to achieve. The ultimate objective or goal has to be one and not many in order to unite and concentrate people's effort to achieve it. The ultimate goal has to be permanent and not changeable in order to achieve stability and cohesiveness in the society. The ultimate goal has to be above materialistic goals because such goals would undoubtedly corrupt it. Neither should it be based on short term goals whereby once they are achieved, others are sought. The ultimate goal which man places for happiness has to be the objective of all objectives.

Hence, the ultimate goal in the Islamic culture is to acquire the pleasure of Allah (swt) and not to attain the realisation of one's self-conscious. This is due to the fact that self-conscious is changeable due to motives, thinking or people themselves (self-conscious is an instinctual comprehension which emanates from man's instinct and produced by those instincts). Thus, the ultimate goal should not be the attainment of 'abstract high morals', the satisfaction of physical needs or any goal that could be nothing but an outlet for other goals upon completion. In addition, the ultimate goal cannot be multiple, changeable or restrictive. The Implementation of the Islamic 'aqeedah, governing man's behavior by the Shari'ah and attaining the pleasure of Allah, as the ultimate goal, will be the cornerstone of the Islamic State.

Hadith: 5 things given to the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: The Prophet said,

"I have been given five things which were not given to any one else before me.
1. Allah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month's journey.

2.
The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum, therefore anyone of my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due.

3. The booty has been made Halal (lawful) for me yet it was not lawful for anyone else before me.

4.
I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection).

5. Every Prophet used to be sent to his nation only but I have been sent to all mankind.

Narrated AbuSa'id (al-Khudri): The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said:

If any Muslim clothes a Muslim when he is naked, Allah will clothe him with some green garments of paradise; if any Muslim feeds a Muslim when he is hungry, Allah will feed him with some of the fruits of paradise; and if any Muslim gives a Muslim drink when he is thirsty, Allah will give him some of the pure wine which is sealed to drink.

(Sunan Abu Dawud Book #9, Hadith #1678)

Narrated AbuUmamah: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said:

I guarantee a house in the surroundings of
paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of paradise for a man who made his character good.
(Sunan Abu Dawud Book #41, Hadith #4782)

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that when,
the son of Adam recites the Ayat of Sajdah (prostration) and then falls down in prostration, the Satan goes into seclusion and weeps and says: Alas, and in the narration of Abu Kuraib the words are: Woe unto me, the son of Adam was commanded to prostrate, and he prostrated and Paradise was entitled to him and I was commanded to prostrate, but I refused and am doomed to hell.

Hadith: he people of Paradise will look at the dwellers of the lofty mansions

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: The Prophet said,

"The people of Paradise will look at the dwellers of the lofty mansions (i.e. a superior place in Paradise) in the same way as one looks at a brilliant star far away in the East or in the West on the horizon; all that is because of their superiority over one another (in rewards)." On that the people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Are these lofty mansions for the prophets which nobody else can reach? The Prophet replied," No! "By Allah in whose Hands my life is, these are for the men who believed in Allah and also believed in the Apostles."

Justice and Equity

Bismillahir Rahmanir
Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Justice and Equity

by Shaykh Abû Bakr Jâbir al-Jaza'iry

The Muslim considers justice in its general context to be one of the most obligatory and necessary obligations, since Allah commanded it in His saying:

"Verily, Allah enjoins justice, and doing good, and giving (help) to kith and kin." (16:90).

"And be equitable. Verily, Allah loves the equitable." (49:9)

The meaning of equity is that of justice, and "the equitable" means "the just." Allah ordered justice in speech as well as in judgements.

He said:

"And whenever you give your word (i.e. judge between men or give evidence), say the truth even if a near relative is concerned." (6:152).

Allah the Almighty says:

"Venly, Allah commands that you should render back the trusts to those whom they are due; and that when you judge between men, you judge with justice ." (4:58).

Therefore, the Muslim is just in his speech and judgements, his every affair is attended to with justice, to the degree that being just becomes a trait he is described with, not denied of him. His sayings and actions are based upon justice with no degree of discrimination, oppression or tyranny. He abides by justice without giving in to any type of desires, thereby deserving Allah's love, acceptance, honor and help. For Allah has informed that He loves the equitable, and Allah's Messenger (SAW) has informed of position of honor before their Lord, saying:

"The equitable will be seated upon pulpits of light before Allah : those who do justice in their decisions, with their families, and what is entrusted to the." (Muslim)

Allah's Messenger (SAW) said:

"Seven will be shaded by Allah on the Day when there will be no shade except His: A just ruler. A youth, who grew up with the worship of Allah. A person whose heart is attached to the mosque. Two people, who love and meet each other and depart from each other for the sake of Allah. A man whom a beautiful and high-ranking woman seduces, but he (rejects this offer and) says: 'I fear Allah'. A person who gives charity and conceals it such that the left hand does not know what the right hand has given. A person who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow (with tears)" (Al-Bukhari)

Categories of Justice

1. Justice with Allah the Almighty: by worshipping Him Alone without associating any with Him while worshipping Him, in His Attributes or otherwise. And that He is obeyed, not disobeyed; remembered, not forgotten; and that one is grateful to Him, not ungrateful.

2. Justice in judgements between people: by giving every rightful person his due.

3. Justice between wives and children: by not giving one preference over another.

4. Justice in speech: by not testifying falsely, nor saying what is false or a lie.

5. Justice in what is believed: by not believing other than the truth and not lending faith to what is not realistic or what did not occur.

An Example of Just Judgement

A man from Egypt entered upon 'Umar bin Al-Khattab while he was sitting and said: "O Leader of the Faithful! Before you is one who seeks refuge."

'Umar said, "You have sought it from one who can give protection, so what is your case?" He said, "I was beating the son of 'Amr bin Al-'Aas in a horse race, so he prevented me by hitting me with his horse whip, saying; 'I am the son of the honorable ones.' When his father 'Amr bin Al-'As learned of this incident he immediately imprisoned me fearing that I would come to you to complain. I was released, and it is from there that I arrive now."

So 'Umar sent a letter to 'Amr bin Al-'Aas, who was then the governor of Egypt saying: "When you receive this letter of mine, then come to me along with your son so-and-so during the Hajj season." 'Umar ordered the Egyptian to stay until they arrived. 'Amr bin Al-'Aas arrived and performed Hajj. When 'Umar finished Hajj and he was sitting among the people 'Amr bin Al-'Aas and his son were seated next to him. Then the Egyptian stood up, 'Umar handed him a whip, and he began hitting him. He continued doing so until those present wanted him to stop because of the many blows he had given him.

'Umar said: "Beat the son of the most honorable ones." The Egyptian man responded to 'Umar: "O Leader of the Faithful! I have been fulfilled and. satisfied." 'Umar said., "Put it on the bald head of 'Amr." He responded: "O Leader of the Faithful! I have struck the one who struck me." 'Umar said, "By Allah, if you take more revenge from him, none would dare to stop, you except yourself." Eventually, 'Umar said to 'Amr bin Al-'Aas: "O 'Amr! When did you begin to enslave and subjugate people, while their mothers have given birth to them as free people?"

Good Results of Justice

One of the best results of justice in judgements is that it instills tranquility in the the hearts of the people. It is reported to have been said that once Caesar sent a messenger to 'Umar bin Al-Khattab to monitor his activities and situation. When his envoy entered Al-Madinah, he started searching for 'Umar and asked, "Where is your king?" They replied, "We do not have any king but an honored 'Amir. He went outside of Al-Madinah." So he went looking for him and discovered him sleeping on the sand using his stick as a pillow. This was a small staff, which he always carried with him, and he used it to stop others when they were doing evil. When he saw him sleeping like that, he sensed humility in his heart and said to himself, "This is the man whom all the kings are worried about, yet look at his condition. O 'Umar, you have been just so you can sleep. While our king is a tyrant, so there he stays up the whole night in fear."

Moderation has a wider meaning than justice. Moderation affects every part of the Muslim's life. It is the method of seeking the middle way between two extremes. Moderation in worship means it should be free from any kind of extremism or negligence.

Moderation in spending means the good that is between way evils, not spending irresponsibly nor being stingy, but the position in between the two. Allah the Almighty says:

"And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)."(25:67).

Moderation in clothing means that it should neither be the clothing of arrogance or pride, nor should it be patched or ripped.

As for moderation in walking, it is to walk in a manner between arrogance and haughtiness, and humility and subjugation. Moderation in every circumstance is the middle between two extremes.

Moderation is the brother of uprightness. It is one of the most noble of virtues and traits, since it is that which stops a person from surpassing Allah's set limits, promoting the performance of the obligatory duties, without falling short or exaggerating. It teaches him to be abstinent, taking what is lawful over that which is not.

Moderation is sufficient enough pride and honor for its practitioner, as Allah said:

“If they (non-Muslims) had believed in Allah, and remained on the Right Way (i.e., Islam) We should certainly have bestowed on them water (rain) in abundance.” (72:16)

And:

"Verily, those who say: "Our Lord is (only) Allah," and thereafter stand straight, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. Such shall be the dwellers of Paradise, abiding therein (forever) a reward for what they used to do." (46:13-14)

Hadith: Example of a good companion and a bad companion

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the seller of musk, and the one who blows the blacksmith's bellows (respectively). So as for the seller of musk then either he will grant you some, or you buy some from him, or at least you enjoy a pleasant smell from him. As for the one who blows the blacksmith's bellows then either he will burn your clothes or you will get an offensive smell from him."

Quran: made you into nations and tribes

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Nations and Tribes

"O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."

[TMQ 49:13]

Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَى صُوَرِكُمْ وَأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَلكِنْ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَأَعْمَالِكُم»

(Verily, Allah does not look at your shapes or wealth, but he looks at your hearts and actions.) Ibn Majah also collected this Hadith.

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that `Abdullah bin `Umar said, "On the day Makkah was conquered, the Messenger of Allah performed Tawaf around the Ka`bah while riding his camel, Al-Qaswa', and was touching the corners with a stick he had in his hand. He did not find a place in the Masjid where his camel could sit and had to dismount on men's hands. He led his camel to the bottom of the valley, where he had her sit down. The Messenger of Allah later gave a speech while riding Al-Qaswa' and said, after thanking Allah the Exalted and praising Him as He should be praised,

(O people! Allah the Exalted has removed from you the slogans of Jahiliyyah and its tradition of honoring forefathers. Men are of two types, a man who is righteous, fearful of Allah and honorable to Allah, or a man who is vicious, miserable and little to Allah the Exalted. Verily, Allah the Exalted and Most Honored said,
(O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.)) The Prophet said,

«أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ لِي وَلَكُم»

(I say this and invoke Allah for forgiveness for me and for you.)'' This was recorded by `Abd bin Humayd.

Invocation of God: Cleansing the Hearts of Tarnish

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Cleansing the Hearts of Tarnish

The Invocation of God

Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah

Abu l-Darda said, “For all things, there is a polish, and for the hearts it is the remembrance of Almighty God.” [Bayhaqi] Bayhaqi cited a hadith on the authority of Abd Allah ibn Umar, quoted directly from the Prophet, where he says, ‘Everything has its polish, and the polish of the hearts is the remembrance of Almighty God. And there is nothing that better delivers from God’s punishment than His remembrance.’ And when they asked, ‘Not even combat [jihad] for His sake?’ he answered, ‘Not even if someone smites with his sword until it breaks it in two.’

Doubtless, a heart grows tarnished like brass or silver, and its polish is by remembrance, which may make it shine like a crystal mirror. So when one neglects the remembrance it tarnishes, and when it returns it shines. Since the heart is tarnished by two things – heedlessness and sin – it is polished by two things: remembrance and asking forgiveness.

If heedlessness dominates most of someone’s time, the tarnish on his heart grows in proportion. And of the heart is tarnished, it ceases to reflect things as they are. Therefore, it sees the false as true and the true as false. As the tarnish grows thicker, the heart grows dimmer, until it no longer reflects reality at all. And if this tarnish builds up, blackness and envelopes the heart completely, the heart’s reflective quality and perception will be totally lost, so that is will neither accept what is true nor reject what is false. Such a fate is the worse that can befall it.

The origin of all this is in the heedlessness and the pursuit of one’s passions, both of which dim the light of the heart and blinds its vision. Thus, God (Most High) says, ‘And follow not one whose heart We have made forgetful of Our mention, who pursues his passions, and whose situation has exceeded [all bounds]. [Qur’ān 18:28] If the servant wishes to follow a man, let him look to see whether this man is of those who remember God or who are heedless; whether he is ruled by the passions or by revelation. If he is heedless and ruled by the passions, then ‘his situation has exceeded [all bounds]’, and he should neither be trusted nor followed, for he will lead you to destruction.

The verse’s reference to ‘excess’ is said to signify ‘discarding’. That is, the order which should be followed and maintained – and in which lies a person’s guidance and success – has been discarded. It is also explained as being ‘waste’, ‘destruction’ or ‘opposition to the truth’, all of which have similar meanings. But the intention [of the verse] is that God prohibits is from following anyone who has these characteristics. So if a man has taken someone as a shaykh, model or a person to emulate, but finds him to be someone in whom the mention of God and practise of the Sunnah predominate, someone who does not trespass God’s commandments but is resolute in keeping them, then he should adhere to him.

There is no difference between the living and the dead except remembrance, for ‘the one who remembers his Lord is to the one who does not as the living to the dead.’ And in Ahmad ibn Hanbal there is a hadith quoted directly from the Prophet: ‘Be so abundant in the remembrance of God [Most High], that it be said [about you], “He is possessed!”’ [Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, 27310]

Misc Quotes: Words to Inspire

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Words to Inspire

Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (Allah have mercy on him) said,

“Those who desire are three types:

  • Those who desire Allah,
  • Those who desire what Allah has,
  • And those who desire other then Allah.

So the lover is the one who desires Allah. The one who is concerned with works is the one who desires what Allah has. And the one who is satisfied with this life, in neglect to the Hereafter, is the one who desires other than Him”.

The essence of knowledge is to know what obedience and worship are. Know that obedience and worship are conformity to the Lawgiver as regards commands and prohibitions, in both word and deed. [Imam Ghazali]

One of our predecessors said, ‘By God! A servant, if truthful to God, will always love to pass unnoticed.’ Another has said, ‘I have never known a man to wish to become known but that his religion quit him and he became exposed.

The Humility of Rasulullah (s.a.w)

Al-Kumushkhanawi:

“Know that humility (tawadu`) is among the greatest, most beautiful and most noble of praiseworthy traits. By humility the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) was made superior to the first and last (of creation), for he was (Allah bless him and give him peace) the most humble of people. He was given the choice between being a king-prophet or a slave-prophet, and chose the latter… From his humility was that he used to ride a donkey, let others ride with him, he used to visit the poor, milk his own goats, raise his garments [for long garments were considered a sign of arrogance], fix his own sandals, serve himself, feed his animals, tidy his house, tie his donkey, eat with servants and workers, and carry his own provision from the market.”

3rd March 1924: Dark days for the Ummah since the destruction of the Khilafah

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

3rd March: Dark days for the Ummah since the destruction of the Khilafah

The 3rd of March is a date that is etched into the history of the Muslim Ummah as one of its darkest days ever. It was on this date in the fateful year of 1924 CE that the last vestige of legitimate Islamic rule was ended. The office of Khilifah was abolished by the treacherous Mustafa Kamal and the Muslim Ummah has since then been plunged in to darkness and humiliation. Thus any trace of the Uthmani Khilafah was extinguished as the 101st Khaleefah of Islam, Abdul Mejid II was exiled from the now secular Republic of Turkey.

His banishment from the land of Anatolia with little more than a suitcase and some cash was the beginning of the humiliation that the Muslim world has suffered to this very day. With what was described as the shield of the Muslims by the Prophet Muhammad (saw) - now in exile, the Ummah was set to be subjected to numerous tragedies that would involve against it murderous wars, foreign occupation, economic strangulation, political manipulation as well as a cultural colonialism that sought to distance the Muslim world from the concept of Islamic ruling and the obligation of living under the Khilafah.

With the sole legitimate leadership of the Muslims, the Khilafah, destroyed the lands of Islam were divided in to numerous statelets and disputed territories. These new entities were established along the lines of ethnicity, sectarianism and racism by the colonialist powers of the day in an attempt to ensure that Muslim Ummah would never rise again. Nationalism that was nurtured by the colonialists in the run up to the destruction of the Khilafah helped to ensure that these new entities would remain at loggerheads, never to think of uniting again. In addition, the blessed land of Palestine was occupied, its inhabitants dispersed so as assuage the West’s guilt and a great injustice was committed in establishing the state of Israel. Any attempts to replicate the power of a unitary leadership of the Muslim world were replaced by pathetic and impotent bodies such as Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC). These organisations were designed to perpetuate disunity and division as they preserved the borders and barriers betweens Muslims that the colonialists had established. These states have never had the interests of Islam and the Muslims at heart. This can be seen to this day, as the OIC and Arab League issue countless resolutions on issues such as Palestine and Iraq without ever actually doing anything to change the status quo. These resolutions are but lip service by the insincere leaders of these entities to the cause of Islam, designed solely to pacify their Muslim populations into thinking that Islam cannot solve the Ummah’s problems.

These rulers have committed far more heinous crimes against the Muslims than simply issuing empty resolutions. Western colonialism put in place a motley crew of dictators, monarchs, autocrats and downright puppets that have served their colonial masters in a manner more loyal than their own populations. Successive rulers have betrayed the interests of Muslims. With their brutality and lack of self-respect seemingly having no limits, the Muslim rulers are falling over themselves in an attempt to please. For example, Qatar today hosts the largest airstrip in the Middle East, to be used exclusively by the US Air Force to bomb Muslim lands and control the skies of the Middle East. Bahrain, which previously hosted the naval forces of the British Empire, now serves as the base for the US Navy’s 5th Fleet. Almost every nation in the Muslim world today has facilitated the military aims of the various colonial at some point. Present day Pakistan, in a clear contradiction of General Musharraf’s own motto of “Pakistan First”, is engaging in a war with his own people whilst compromising the sovereignty of the country in allowing US troops to act with impunity. Deploying his powerful military not to defend Muslims from aggression, he has made the Pakistani Armed forces nothing more than mercenaries. They are forced to act as mercenaries by the regime for some paltry economic aid for a corrupt government whilst the blood and honour of their brothers and sisters is violated on a global scale. Due to these tyrannical rulers the armies of the Muslim world have been held back, shackled to their bases, unable to come to the aid of their brethren in Chechnya, the Balkans, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq or anywhere else that conflict rages.

Since the destruction of the Khilafah in 1924 there has been an assault on the resources in the Muslim lands. Starting with the 100-year contracts signed with western oil companies to drill for oil in the 1930’s, lucrative contracts are being signed by western agencies for natural resources that rightfully belong to the Ummah. The most recent of which have been the colonial style Production Sharing Agreements (PSA’s) for Iraqi oil. These agreements mean that Iraq oil will be privatised, ending up in the hands of foreign, mostly US, oil companies. In addition to this, these agreements spell out that these oil companies will make up to a massive 75% profit on the oil, with 65 of Iraq’s roughly 80 known oil fields being offered to these companies for exploration. In the words of Dick Cheney during his time as Haliburton CEO in 1999 who said, "By 2010 we will need [a further] 50 million barrels a day. The Middle East, with two-thirds of the oil and the lowest cost, is still where the prize lies.” Even the wealth that has been generated has not been utilised by the rulers for the benefit of the people or to secure long-term independence and self-sufficiency. A lack of investment in education, employment and technological infrastructure means that billions of dollars are wasted on importing resources, which could be developed at home. It is shocking that Iran, the world’s fourth largest oil producer, can only produce 57% of the nation’s daily petrol consumption due to a lack of refineries.

The Muslim world has indeed seen destruction, devastation and calamity for the past 83 years. However, the signs of awakening for the return of the Khilafah are now clear for all to see. The proof of this can be seen in the growing gulf between the rulers and the ruled; the speeches and Khutbahs in universities and mosques throughout the Muslim world that call for a sincere and rightly guided Khaleefah to lead the Ummah; witness the mass demonstrations against the bombing and killing of innocent Muslims by US and UK forces in Karachi, Jakarta, Hebron, Dhaka and other places; the increasingly brutal methods and oppression that the regimes are forced to use to quell the desire for political change such as in Egypt and Uzbekistan. It can also be seen by the actions of the colonial powers who realise that the rulers they imposed upon the Muslim world have no support and no legitimacy, hence they are forced to resort to occupying Muslim lands and cementing their presence through military bases. The global reawakening for Khilafah can also be seen in the desperate and pathetic attempts by the regimes and their scholars, who they have bought for a cheap price, to malign, slander and attack the idea of Khilafah. They lie by saying that the Khilafah cannot be established in the modern age, that Islam and politics do not mix, that sectarian differences are too great, that the western powers are too powerful and that the Ummah of Muhammad (saw) can never be unified. All of the efforts of the enemies of Islam will be in vain for Allah (swt) has promised the believers that the Khilafah will return on the method of the Prophet and there is no power or might other than Allah (swt).

Urgently Wanted: One Good Khaleef to unite the Ummah

Islamic Evidences for the Obligation of the Khilafah

Islam has been reduced to merely a state "religion" and Secularism is hailed as the states Ideology. The Kuffar succeeded in divorcing our system, the Khilafah, from our lives.

"We must put an end to anything which brings about any Islamic unity between the sons of the Muslims. As we have already succeeded in finishing off the Khilafah, so we must ensure that there will never arise again unity for the Muslims, whether it be intellectual or cultural unity." The British Foreign Minister addressing the British Prime Minister shortly before World War II.

"The situation now is that Turkey is dead and will never rise again, because we have destroyed its moral strength, the Khilafah and Islam." Lord Curzon, British Foreign Minister, in front of the House of Commons after the Lausanne Treaty of July 24th, 1924.

Is it any wonder, then, that Muslims today don't even know about their true ruling system? That they have never even heard the word Khilafah uttered in any discussion related to their revival? The British have succeeded in "educating" us to such an extent that we run towards their system and rush to abandon our Deen. So what is this Khilafah? Why is it so vital for Islam?

The mechanism through which we live Islam is the Khilafah ruling system. This is the same Khilafah ruling system that the Khulafa Rashideen implemented and the same one which existed right up until 3rd March, 1924, when it was destroyed by the British agent and traitor, Mustafah Kemal. The Prophet (saw) said:

"The knots of Islam will be broken one by one until everyone of them is undone. The first to be undone will be the knot of ruling and the last will be the knot of Salah" (Musnad of Imam Ahmed)

The Fard (obligation) of the Khilafah

In the Glorious Qur'an. Allah (SWT) says in the translation of the meaning of the Qur'an ul-Kareem:

1. "But no, by your Lord, they will not have iman until they make you (O Prophet) rule between them in that which they dispute, and they find in their souls no resistance against your decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction" (TMQ 4:65).

2. "Indeed, we have revealed to you the book with the truth so that you may rule between mankind by that which Allah has shown you" (TMQ 4:105).

3. "So rule between them by that which Allah has revealed, and follow not their desires, but beware of them in case they seduce you from just some part of that which Allah has revealed to you" (TMQ 4:49).

4. "Whosoever does not rule by that which Allah has revealed, they are disbelievers (Kafiroon).....the dhaalimoon (oppressors)....the fasiqoon (evil doers)" (TMQ 4. 5:44-47)

These ayaat(versus) of Qur'an, and many others, prove beyond doubt the obligation of ruling by what Allah has revealed. The first one in particular refers to the Muslims directly by stating that we have no real Imaan (belief) until we make them judge between us by Allah's revelation. This is an indication of the obligation for all Muslims to establish Allah'sruling system.

In the Ahadeeth of our beloved Prophet (saw):

1: Imam Muslim narrated from Abu Hazim who said: I was with Abu Hurairah for five years and I heard him narrate from the Prophet (SAW) that he said: "The Prophets used to rule Bani Israel. Whenever a prophet died another prophet succeeded him, but there will be no prophets after me; instead there will be Khulafaa' (Khalifahs) and they will number many". They asked: what then do you order us? He said: "fulfil allegiance to them one after the other. Give them their dues. Verily Allah will ask them about what he entrusted them with".

This Hadeeth is a clear statement of the fact that the form of government in Islam, after the Prophet (SAW) is the Khilafah, and not an Islamic Republic, Islamic Socialist Republic or Islamic Imarah. This understanding is supported by numerous other Hadeeth that indicate the only system of government in Islam is the Khilafah.

2: Imam Muslim narrated from Abdullah bin 'Umar who said that the Prophet (saw) said,

"One who dies without having bound himself by an oath of allegiance (to a Khalifah) will die the death of one belonging to the days of ignorance(Jahiliyah)".

3. Ahmed and Ibn abi 'Asim narrated that the Prophet (saw) said, "Whosoever dies and he does not have over him an Imaam, he dies the death of Jahiliyyah".

Thus the Prophet (SAW) made it compulsory that every Muslim should have over him an Imaam, which is also represented by having a pledge of allegiance (bayah) on his or her neck. The pledge of allegiance is not given to anyone except the Khalifah. The Ahadeeth inform us that those who run the affairs of Muslims are Khalifahs (some times called Amir ul-Mu'mineen or the Imam). Therefore, this is a command to establish or appoint them.

In the sayings of the Sahabah:

Ali ibn abi Taalib (r.a.) said, "The people will not be straightened except by an Imaam (Khaleefah), whether he is good or bad". (Bayhaqi, No. 14286, Kanz ul-ummal)

Abdullah ibn 'Umar (r.a.) said "The people in the Ummah will not suffer even if they were oppressors and sinful if the rulers were guided and were guiding. But the people in the Ummah will suffer and perish even if they were guided and were guiding if the rulers were oppressors and sinful". (Abu Nu'aim narrated in 'Hulayat Awliyyah.)

'Umar ibn al-Khattab (r.a.) said, "Laa Islam bi laa Jamaa'ati wa laa jamaa'ati bi laa Imaarah, wa laa Imaaratu bi laa sam'on wa taa'ah". "There is no Islam without a community, and there is no community without a leadership, and there is no authoruty without hearing and obeying".

In the sayings of the Ulemaa:

Imam al-Qurtubi said in his Tafseer of the verse, "Indeed, man is made upon this earth a Khaleefah" (TMQ 2:30) that: "Haatheeh il-Aayatu asalun fee nasabi Imaamin wa Khaleefatin, yosma'oo lahu
wa yotaa'u li-tajtami'i bihi il-kalimatih, wa tonaffithu bihi ahkaam il-Khaleefah, wa laa khalaafu fee wajoobi thalik bayna al-Ummati wa laa bayn al-a'immah, illa maa rawaya 'an il-Asam al-Mu'tazzili..." "This Ayah is a source in the selection of an Imaam, and a Khaleefah, he is ened to and he is obeyed, for the word is united through him, and the Ahkam (laws) of the Khaleefah are implemented through him, and there is no difference regarding the obligation of that between the Ummah, nor between the Imams except what is narrated about al-Asam, the Mu'tazzili (a deviant group)...". (Tafseer ul-Qurtubi 264/1.)

Imam al-Qurturbi (rh.a.) also said, "The Khilafah is the pillar upon which other pillars rest".

Imam an-Nawawi (rh.a.) said, "Ijma'oo 'alaa annahu yajib 'alal-Muslimeena nasabun Khaleefah". "(The scholars) consented that it is an obligation upon the Muslims to select a Khaleefah". (Sharhu Sahih Muslim page 205 vol 12)

Imaam al-Ghazali (rh.a.) when writing of the potential consequences of losing the Khilafah said, "The judges will be suspeneded, the Wilayaat (provinces) will be nullified, ... the decrees of those in authority will not be executed and all the people will be on the verge of Haraam". (al Iqtisaad fil Itiqaad page 240.)

Ibn Taymiyyah (rh.a.) said, "Yajib an yo'rafa anna wilayata amr in-naasi min a'thami waajibaat id-Deen, Bal laa qiyaamu li-Deen illa bihaa".

"It is obligatory to know that the office in charge of commanding over the people (ie: the Khilafah post) is one of the greatest obligations of the Deen. In fact, their is no establishment of the Deen except by it....this is the opinion of the salaf, such as al-Fadl ibn 'Iyaad, Ahmed ibn Hanbal and others". (Siyaasah Shariyyah - chapter: 'The obligation of adherence to the leadership'.)

Imam abu ul-Hasan al-Mawardi (rh.a.) said, "'Aqd ul-Imamati li man yaqoomu bihaa fil-ummati wajib bil-Ijmaa' ". "The contract of the Imamah (leadership) for whoever is standing with it, is an obligation by Ijmaa'a (consensus)". (al-Ahkam us-Sultaniyyah [Arabic] p 56.)

Imam Ahmed (rh.a.) said: "Al-Fitnatu Ithaa lam yakun Imaamun Yaqoomu bi amril-Muslimeen", which means, "The Fitna (mischief and tribuulations) occurs when there is no Imaam established over the affairs of the people".

Abu Hafs Umar al-Nasafi (rh.a.) a noted scholar of the 6th century Hijri states; "The Muslims simply must have an Imam (Khaleefah), who will execute the rules, establish the Hudud (penal system), defend the frontiers, equip the armies, collect Zakah, punish those who rebel (against the state) and those who spy and highwaymen, establish Jum'ah and the two 'Eids, settle the dispute among the servants (of Allah), accept the testimony of witnesses in matters of legal rights, give in marriage the young and the poor who have no family, and distribute the booty".

Imam Al-Juzayri, an expert on the Fiqh of the four great schools of thought said regarding the four Imams, "The Imams (scholars of the four schools of thought- Shafi'i, Hanafi, Maliki, Hanbali)- may Allah have mercy on them- agree that the Imamah (Leadership) is an obligation, and that the Muslims must appoint an Imam who would implement the deen's rites, and give the oppressed justice against the oppressors". ("Fiqh ul-Mathahib ul- Arba'a" [the Fiqh of the four schools of thought], volume 5, page 416.)

Imam al-Haythami said, "A'lamu anna Sahabata- Ridhwaan Allahu 'alayhim -Ajma'oo 'ala anna nasab al-Imaamata ba'd inqiraadhi zaman in-Naboowa waajibon bal ja'aloohu ahamu wajibaat hayth ushtaghloo bihi 'an dafani rasool illah". "It is known that the Sahabah (r.a.h) consented that selecting the Imaam after the end of the era of Prophethood was an obligation (Wajib). Indeed they made it (more) important than the (other) obligations whilst they were busy with it over the burial of the Prophet (saw)". (al-Haythami in Sawaa'iq ul-haraqah:17.)

The Obligation of there being only one Khalifah for the entire Muslim Ummah

In the ahadeeth of the beloved Prophet (saw)

1) The Prophet (saw) said: "When the oath of allegiance has been taken for two Khalifs, kill the latter of them". (Narrated in Sahih Muslim by Sa'id al-Khudri)

2) The Prophet (saw) also said: "Whoever comes to you while your affairs has been united under one man, intending to break your strength or dissolve your unity, kill him." (Narrated in Sahih Muslim by 'Arfajah)

So what is with the Muslims who insist on establishing regional Islamic Imarah's (Governments) based upon nationalistic divisions drawn up by the British and her fellow colonialists? Can’t we see beyond the plans of the Kuffar? What of those Muslims who wish to establish Islamic Governments in "their own" country and then to resume normal relationships with the rest of the Muslim countries, as if the rest of the Muslim countries are perfectly legal under Islam? Having more than one Khalifah for the entire Ummah is a sin, a fitnah and a division in our ranks.

In the Ijma'a (consensus) of the Sahabah (r.a.)

It is in the books of "As-Sirah" of Ibnu Kathir, "Tarikh ut-Tabari" by at-Tabari, "Siratu Ibn Hisham" by Ibn Hisham, "As-Sunan ul-Kubra" of Bayhaqi, "Al-fasil-fil Milal" by Ibnu Hazim and "Al-A'kd Al-Farid" of Al-Waqidi, that Al-Habbab Ibn ul-Munthir said when the Sahaba met in the wake of the death of the Prophet (SAW) (at the thaqifa hall) of Bani Sa'ida:

"Let there be one Amir from us and one Amir from you (meaning one from the Ansar and one from the Mohajireen)". Upon this Abu Bakr replied: "It is forbidden for Muslims to have two Amirs (rulers)..." Then he got up and addressed the Muslims.

It has additionally been reported in "as-Sirah" of Ibnu Ishaq that Abu Bakr went on to say on the day of Thaqifa: "It is forbidden for Muslims to have two Amirs for this would cause differences in their affairs and concepts, their unity would be divided and disputes would break out amongst them. The Sunnah would then be abandoned, the bida'a (innovations) would spread andFitna would grow, and that is in no one's interests".

The Sahabah (ra) agreed to this and selected Abu Bakr (ra) as their first Khalifah. Habbab ibn Mundhir (ra) who suggested the idea of two Ameers corrected himself and was the first to give Abu Bakr the Baya'a (pledge of allegiance). This indicates an Ijma'a of all of the Sahabah (ra) and thus is a divine source for us. Ali ibni abi Talib(ra), who was attending the body of the Prophet (saw) at the time, also consented to this.

In the quotes of famous scholars:

1. Imam ash-Shawkaani wrote in his book "Tafseer al-Qur'an al-Atheem", volume 2, page 215: "It is known from Islam by necessity (bi-dharoorah - i.e.: like prayer and fasting) that Islam has forbidden division amongst Muslims and the segregation of their land".

2. The well renowned Imam Hassan Al-Mawardi(ra) in his book "AlAahkam Al-Sultaniyah" page 9 says: "It is forbidden for the Ummah to have two Imams (leaders) at the same time."

3. Imam An-Nawawi in his book "Mughni Al-Muhtaj", volume 4, page 132 says: "It is forbidden to give an oath to two Imams or more, even in different parts of the world and even if they are far apart".

He also stated in his book, "Sharhu Sahih Muslim" (explanation of Sahih Muslim) chapter 12 page 231, "If a baya'a were taken for two Khalifahs one after the other, the baya'a of the first one would be valid and it should be fulfilled and honoured whereas the baya'a of the second would be invalid, and it would be forbidden to honour it. This is the right opinion which the majority of scholars follow, and they agree that it would be forbidden to appoint two Khalifah's at one given time, no matter how great and extended the Islamic lands become".

4. The Imam Ibnu Hazm in his book "Al-Muhalla", volume 4, page 360 says: "It is unlawful to have more than one Imam in the whole of the world".

5. Al-Imam Al-Juzieri, an expert on the Fiqh of the four great schools of thought said regarding the four Imams, "...It is forbidden for Muslims to have two Imams in the world whether in agreement or discord." From: "Fiqh ul-Mathahib ul- Arba'a" (the fiqh of the four schools of thought), volume 5, page 416.

Conclusion:

In conclusion it can be seen that the Khilafah ruling system implements the whole of Islam, thus Islam and the Muslims depend on it. It is not just one fard but the mechanism through which Islam is implemented. This is why the Prophetic calender of the Muslims starts with year 1 Hijri. What the Hijrah signifies is the leaving behind of the Makkan Shirk and the establishment of Islam in Madina as a governing system. So year 1 Hijri begins from the first day of Islamic Government, not from the date of first revelation, or the Prophets (saw) birth as it could have done and as the Christians practice. Thus anyone who makes excuses for this issue will be neglecting the biggest duty in Islam, to establish the Deen. The death of Jahillyyah will be upon him and so it is Fard to work with those who know about the Khilafah and who are working for it according to the methodology of the Prophet (saw), and this is the biggest duty upon the Muslims today above all else. Nobody can claim that this is an impossible task as Allah (swt) promises the victory of the believers and confirms:

"Allah has promised those amongst you who believe and work righteous deeds, that he will indeed grant them inheritance of power in the earth, as he granted it to those before them; that he will establish in authority their Deen, which he has chosen for them, and that he will change their state from a state of fear into a state of security and peace. They will worship me alone and not associate partners with me, and those who reject faith after this, they will be the rebellious and the wicked" TMQ (an-Noor :55)

Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal extracted that Huthayfah said the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:"The Prophecy will remain amongst you as long as Allah wills, then Allah will lift it when he wishes, then it will be a Khilafah Rashidah (i.e.: The first four Khalifahs) on the method of the Prophecy, it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then he will lift it when he wills, then it will be a hereditary leadership (i.e.: the Abbasid and Ummayid dynasties etc.) for as long as Allah wills then he will lift it when he so wills. Then there will be a tyrannical rule (i.e.: all the current Kufr regimes of the Muslims) for as long as Allah wills, then he will lift it when he so wills, then there will be a Khilafah Rashidah on the method of the Prophecy, then he kept silent." (Musnad Imam Ahmed 4/273)

and concerning the liberation of Masjid al-Aqsa from the Jews, the Prophet (saw) said,

"Two Hijrahs will take place, and the latter will be to the place where your father Ibrahim may peace be upon him had immigrated” (i.e.: Palestine) Note: Hijrah occurs when Muslims emigrate from Kufr lands to the Islamic state.

Subsequently, nobody can claim that this task is an impossible one as it has been promised success by Allah (swt) and his Messenger (saw). All that remains is for the faithful to rush to carry out this noble work and to carry the da'wah to this ummah and remind her of her Deen.

Imam Ahmed reported in his Musnad (5/35) that the Messenger (saw) said: "If the people of As-Sham (Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria) went astray then there would be no goodness amongst you, but however there will continue to be a group supported from my Ummah, and they will not be bothered by those who disapproved until the day of Judgement".

May Allah make us from that group, and support us in re-establishing his Deen on his earth. Ameen.
