Jinns, Magic and Shaytaan

Jinns, Magic and Shaytaan

Magic and Sorcery a Reality!

According to Quran and Sunnah, the existence of Magic and Jinns is a reality. There are people who deny completely or deny some basic facts about Jinns and Magic. On the other hand we find people who are so much involved in it that they step out of the teachings of Islam while protecting themselves from the influence of these two things i.e. Magic and Jinns. The majority does not know what Islam says about this issue and suffer from their influence because of lack of knowledge. This article is prepared to educate innocent people about how to protect themselves from Magic, Jinns and Satan purely according to the Quran and Sahih Ahadeeth of the Holy Prophet (saw).

So we start with the evidence from the Quran about the reality of Magic. Allah says:

" They followed what the devils (Shayateen) recited (of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaiman (Solomon). Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching them magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut. But neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, 'We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us).'

And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's leave. And they learn that which harms them and profits them not. And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their own selves, if they but knew. " [2:102]

This verse is a clear proof about the reality of Magic. More examples can be cited to prove it, but we will limit ourselves to this much only and pay more attention towards our target i.e. How to protect ourselves from it.

The Protection and Treatment:

This is the part where many people go wrong. They try to guard or treat people from Magic, Satan and Jinns by acts, which are against the Quran and Sunnah. Being a Muslim no one is allowed to act in a way that is contrary to the teachings of Quran and Sunnah. Allah says:

" It is not fitting for a believer, man or woman when a matter has been decided by Allah and His apostle to have any option in their decision. If anyone disobeys Allah and His apostle, he is indeed on a clearly wrong path " [33:36]

If we seek protection from someone other than Allah then it will be Shirk (Polytheism).

It is extremely essential not to exceed the limits set by Allah and His Prophet. And one should remember that the Satan would only leave us if we follow the Quran and Sunnah only. He would love to be with us and live with us if we take anything else as a source of protection or live a life that is against the Quran and Sunnah. This is no brain surgery but common sense! One likes to be with someone whom he likes and stays away from someone whom he does not like. So what about the Satan! Would he like to be with someone who follows the Quran and Sunnah only? Not at all! He is an open enemy of those who follow Islam completely. Allah says:

" O you who believe! Enter in Islam completely (By obeying all rules and regulations) and follow not the footsteps of Satan. He is your clear enemy." [2:208]

So on the basis of Quran and Sunnah, let us start with the treatment now. This issue will be discussed under four headings (Insha Allah), namely:

  • Some Basic Requirements
  • Recitation of the Holy Quran
  • Recitation of Supplications
  • Miscellaneous Remedies

A) Some Basic Requirements:

Following are some basic points that one should keep in mind and follow in order to keep himself away from the influence of Jinns, Satan and Magic.

  1. One should throw away all amulets or bracelets, from which one seeks protection. It should be clear that only Allah protects from harm and nothing else.

  2. The surroundings inside and outside the house should be made according to Quran and Sunnah. If pictures of living beings decorate the place, then one should remove them all, so that the Angels may enter the house. One should also get rid of dogs, if there are any in the house. It is permissible to keep them for hunting or security reasons only but even then they should never be allowed to enter the inside living premises of the house.

Narrated Abu Talha, The Prophet (saw) said:

  3. " Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog
    or there are pictures."
    [Bukhari - Book of Dress]

  4. One should get rid off all musical instruments and musical cassettes from one's house.

  5. If there is anything else that is going against the Shariah, then one should correct it. For example, women not doing hijab, men wearing gold or silk etc.

  6. Religious education based on Quran and authentic Ahaadeeth should be a routine so that positive link with Allah develops.

  7. One should be in the company of religious people.

  8. One should offer prayers in congregation. This act is something which keeps the Satan away. Otherwise he (the Satan) can gain control. Abi Al-Darda said, I heard from the Prophet, He (saw) said:

  9. " If there are three persons in a town and (or) desert (like Nomads) and they do not establish prayers (Salah), the Satan gets control over them. Thus it is your responsibility to be with the Jamat (Congregation). No doubt that the wolf eats (the goat) that is far away (from its flock)." [Abu Dawood - Book of Prayers]

Al-Sa'ib (a narrator of this hadeeth) says that Jamat (Congregation) here means to say prayers in Congregation (Jamat)

  10. One should be very cautious regarding the prayers in order to stay away from the Satan. As narrated by Abdullah,

  11. " A person was mentioned before the Prophet. He (the Prophet) was told that the man had kept on sleeping till morning and had not got up for the prayer. The prophet said, 'Satan urinated in his ear'." [Bukhari - Book of Tahajjud]

  12. Narrated Jabir, The Prophet (saw) said:

  13. " When night falls or it is evening, restrain your children (from going out), for the devils spread out at that time. When a period of time from the night elapses, then let them (the children) free. Close the doors and mention the name of Allah, for Satan does not open a closed door " [Bukhari - Book of Beginning of creation]

B) Recitation of the Quran:

  1. Daily Recitation of The Holy Quran:

It should be a daily routine to recite from the Quran and then understand its meaning. This does not mean to recite one complete chapter or a page. Quantity is not what is important. One should recite the amount that is comfortable, even if it is only one line. The important thing is regularity, understanding and acting upon it.

Recitation of the Holy Quran has many advantages. One of them is that it is a source of healing. Allah says in The Quran:

" And We send down of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe, and it increases the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers) in nothing but loss." [17:82]

Healing can be both spiritual and physical and thus one can use the Quran to cure spiritual and physical problems. There are some ahadeeth which mention specific portions of the Quran to be recited for seeking protection against the Satan and illness. In addition to this portion, any part of the Quran can be recited for the purpose of curing. This would be based upon the hadeeth in which Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'I reported:

" We practiced incantation in the pre-Islamic days and we said: Allah's Messenger, what is your opinion about it? He said: Let me know your incantation and said: There is no harm in the incantation that does not smack of polytheism " [Muslim - Book of As-Salaam]

According to this hadeeth, if an incantation does not contain any polytheistic element, it is allowed, even if it is of a pre-Islamic time. The above mentioned incantation allowed by the Prophet was unlikely to contain Quranic verses, as the narrator mentions that they were in the pre-Islamic period. If that was allowed, then how good would it be to use verses of the Quran in our incantations, since there can be no possibility of polytheistic element in it and especially when Allah says that there is healing in it.

  2. Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha and Using it for Incantation:

  3. Abu Saeed Khudri reported that some people among the Companions of Allah's Messenger set out on a journey. They happened to pass by a tribe from the tribes of Arabia. They demanded hospitality from the members of that tribe, but they (members of that tribe) did not extend any hospitality to them. They (members of that tribe) said to them: Is there any incantator amongst you? As the chief of the tribe has been stung by a scorpion. A person amongst us said: Yes. So he came to him and practiced incantation with the help of Surah Al-Fatiha and the person became all right.

He was given a flock of sheep (as recompense), but he refused to accept that, saying: I shall make a mention of it to Allah's Apostle, and if he approves of it, then I shall accept it. So we came to Allah's Apostle and made a mention of that to him, and he (that person) said, O Allah's Messenger, by Allah, I did not practice incantation but with the help of Surah Al-Fatiha of the Holy Book. He (the Holy Prophet) smiled and said: How did you come to know that it can be used (as incantation)? - and said: Take out of that and allocate a share for me along with your share. [Bukhari - Book of Medicine] [Muslim - Book of As-Salaam]

  4. Recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah for Kicking Out the Satan:

  5. Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet (saw) said:

" Do not make your homes like the graveyards, indeed the devils flee from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah has been read." [Muslim - Book of Traveler's prayer and its shortening]

  6. To Recite Ayat Al-Kursi [2:255], Especially before going to Sleep:

  7. Narrated Muhammad bin Sirin, Abu Huraira said:

" Allah's Apostle put me incharge of the Zakat of Ramazan (i.e. Zakat ul Fitr). Some one came to me and started scooping some of the food stuff of (Zakat) with both hands. I caught him and told him that I would take him to Allah's Apostle. Then Abu Huraira told the whole narration and added,

'He (i.e. the thief) said: Whenever you go to your bed, recite the verse of Al-Kursi [2:255] for then a guardian from Allah will be guarding you, and Satan will not approach you till dawn'.

On that the Prophet said, 'He told you the truth, though he is a liar, and he himself is Satan'. [Bukhari - Book of Beginning of creation]

  8. Reciting the Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at Night:

  9. Narrated Abu Masud, the Prophet (saw) said:

" If somebody recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, it will be sufficient for him " [Bukhari - Book of Virtues of The Quran]

  10. Recitation of Surah Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas:

  11. Narrated Aisha (Allah be pleased with her): Whenever the Prophet (saw) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas (i.e. Surah 112, 113, & 114). And then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. [Bukhari - Book of Virtues of The Quran]

Narrated Aisha (Allah be pleased with her): During his fatal illness, the Prophet (saw) used to recite the 'Mu'auwidhat' (Surah Al-Falaq [113] and An-Naas [114]) and then blow his breath over his body. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite those two Surahs and blew my breadth over him and made him rub his body with his own hand for its blessings. Ma'mar asked Az-Zuhri: How did the Prophet used to blow? Az-Zuhri said: He used to blow on his hands and then passed them over his face. [Bukhari - Book of Medicine]

C) Recitation of Supplications:

  1. In a hadeeth narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari, the Prophet (saw) said:

  2. "... O Abu Musa or O Abdullah! Shall I not tell you a sentence from the treasure of paradise? I said: 'Yes' He said:

(i.e. No ability or Strength but with Allah) " [Bukhari - Book of Invocations]

  3. Narrated Abu Huraira, Allah's Apostle (saw) said: If one says one hundred times in one day,

  4. " None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Alone Who has no partners, to Him belongs Dominion and to Him belong all the Praises, and He has power over all things (i.e Omnipotent) "

One will get the reward of manumitting ten slaves and one hundred good deeds will be written in his account, and one hundred bad deeds will be wiped off (or erased) from his account. And on that day he will be protected from the Satan, from morning till evening. And nobody will be superior to him except one who has done more (recitation of this prayer or other good deeds) than that which he has done. [Bukhari - Book of Beginning of Creation]

  5. While going to bed one may recite:

  6. " With the name of Allah I lie down. O Allah! Forgive my sins, and scram away my Satan, and set me free from the confinement (of the Satan), and render me in a superior convention " [Abu Dawood, Mustadrak Hakim]

  7. Narrated Aisha (Allah be pleased with her): The Prophet (saw) used to treat some of his wives by passing his right hand (over the place of ailment) and saying,

  8. " O Allah, The Lord of the people! Remove the trouble and heal the patient, for You are the Healer. No healing is of any avail but Yours. Healing that will leave behind no ailment " [Bukhari - Book of Medicine]

  9. Abu Saeed reported that Jibreel (Gabriel) came to Allah's Messenger and said, Muhammad (peace be upon him) have you fallen ill? Thereupon he said, Yes. He (Jibreel) said:

  10. " With the name of Allah I exorcise you, from everything that may harm you, from the evil of every soul or from the eye of a jealous one. Allah would cure you and I invoke the name of Allah for you " [Muslim - Book of As-Salaam]

  11. Khaula bint Hakeem reported, I heard Allah's Messenger (saw) as saying, When anyone lands at a place and then says:

  12. " I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of
Allah from the evil of what he has created "

Nothing would harm him until he marches from that stopping place. [Muslim - Book of seeking refuge in Allah]

  13. Hazrat Usman (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (saw) said, Whoever said three times,

  14. " In the name of Allah with Whose name nothing is harmed
on earth nor in the heavens and He is The All-Seeing, The All-Knowing."

Will not face sudden onset of distress up till night. And whoever says it in the evening time, will not face sudden onset of distress up till morning. If Allah wills. [Musnad Ahmad]

  15. Before entering the lavatory, one should seek refuge with Allah from evil things. Narrated Anas bin Malik, whenever the Prophet entered the lavatory, he used to say,

  16. " O Allah! I seek refuge with you from the bad and evil things "
    [Bukhari - Book of Invocations]

The words 'Al-Khubusay Wal-Khaba'isay' also support the meaning of male and female Jinns or Satan.

  17. Narrated Ibn Abbas, the Prophet said: If anyone of you, when intending to have a sexual intercourse with his wife says,

  18. " With the name of Allah. O Allah! Protect us from the Satan and prevent the Satan from (approaching) what you bestow us with (i.e. the child) "

And the couple is destined to have a child (out of that very sexual relation) then Satan will not be able to harm that child. [Bukhari - Book of Invocations]

  19. Jubair bin Mut'im said he saw the Prophet (saw) reciting the following supplication while starting his prayers,

  20. " Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great. Much Praise is for Allah, morning and evening (Three times). I declare the Perfection of Allah, morning and evening (Three times). O Allah! I take refuge with You from the cursed Satan, from his madness, his pride and his poetry " [Musnad Ahmad]

  21. Uqba bin Muslim narrated from Abdullah bin Amr that, while entering the mosque the Prophet (saw) used to say,

  22. " I take refuge with Allah, The Supreme. And with His Noble Face, and His eternal authority, from the accursed Satan "

When someone says this, the Satan utters (about him): " He is protected from me for the rest of the day " [Abu Dawood - Book of Prayers]

  23. Narrated Abu Huraira, The Prophet (saw) said:

  24. " When you hear the crow of a rooster, ask Allah for His bounty for it has seen an angel.

And when you hear the braying of an ass, seek refuge in Allah for it has seen a devil " [Bukhari - Book of Beginning of creation]

  25. Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah, The Prophet (saw) said:

" Whenever you hear the barking of dogs or the braying
of asses, seek refuge in Allah from the devil "
    [Musnad Ahmad]

  26. Supplication to ward off the deception of the obstinate Satan:

  27. " I take refuge within Allah's perfect words which no righteous and unrighteous person can transgress, from all the evil that He has created, made and scattered. (I take refuge) from the evil that descends from the sky and the evil that rises up to it. (I take refuge) from the evil that is spread on Earth and the evil that springs from her. And I take refuge from the evil of the tribulations of night and day, and the evil of one who visits at night, except the one who brings good, O Merciful One! [Musnad Ahmad]

D) Miscellaneous Remedies:

  1. Use of 'Ajwa' Dates:
  2. Narrated Saad, the Prophet (saw) said:

" Anyone who eats 'Ajwa' dates daily in the morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on that day till night (Another narrator said seven dates)" [Bukhari - Book of Medicine]

  3. Use of Black Caraway:
  4. Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Apostle (saw) saying,

" There is healing in 'Al-Habbat As-Sauda' (i.e. Black Cumin / Black Caraway / Kalonji) for all diseases except death " [Bukhari - Book of Medicine]

  5. Use of Honey:
  6. " And your Lord revealed to the bee, Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build. Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from their bellies a beverage of many colours, in which there is healing for mankind. Verily in this is a sign for those who give thought " [16:68,69]

  7. The Evil Eye:

Influence of an Evil Eye is a Reality:

  8. Ibn e Abbas reported from Allah's Messenger (saw), he said:

" The influence of an evil eye is a fact. If any thing would precede the destiny, it would be the influence of an evil eye. And when you are asked to take a bath (for curing purpose), then you should take a bath " [Muslim - Book of As-Salaam]

Treatment of Influence by an Evil Eye:

    • If one suspects or comes to find out the person who is responsible for the influence of an evil eye, then that person should be asked to wash himself. His used leftover water should be poured over the affected person. Insha Allah he will be all right.

" Abu Umama said, Amir bin Rabee'a saw Sahl bin Hunaif while he was having a bath. He said, I have never seen like what I have seen today (i.e. Sahl's beautiful skin). Even a girl who keeps herself covered does not have a skin (like that of Sahl's). Sahl straightaway fell ill. This (news) was brought into Allah's Messenger notice and he was asked: Can you do anything about Sahl bin Hunaif? By Allah he cannot even raise his head. He (the Prophet) said: Do you suspect anyone? They said we suspect Amir bin Rabee'a. Allah's Messenger called upon Amir and got displeased with him, and said: On what basis does anyone amongst you slay his brother, that you do not wish him with Allah's Blessing (One should say "Barak Allah" or "Masha Allah" while seeing something amazing).

The Prophet then asked Amir to wash himself for Sahl. He (Amir) washed his face, hands, elbows, knees, extremity of legs (feet), and inner portion of his cloth in a bowl. The (leftover water) was then poured over Sahl and he got rid of his ailment. [Al-Muwatta Imam Maalik]

    • Abu Saeed reported that Jibraeel came to Allah's Messenger (saw) and said, O Muhammad (peace be upon him) Have you fallen ill? Thereupon he said, Yes. He (Jibraeel) said:

    • " With the name of Allah I exorcise you, from everything that may harm you, from the evil of every soul or from the eye of a jealous one. Allah would cure you and I invoke the name of Allah for you " [Muslim - Book of As-Salaam]

    • Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) the wife of Allah's Apostle said: When Allah's Messenger fell ill, Jibraeel used to recite and say,

    • " With the name of Allah. He will free you and cure you from all kinds of illness and (safeguard) you from the evil of a jealous one when he feels jealous and from the evil influence of eye " [Muslim - Book of As-Salaam]

    • Narrated Aisha (Allah be pleased with her): The Prophet (saw) used to treat some of his wives by passing his right hand (over the place of ailment) and saying,

    • " O Allah, the Lord of the people! Remove the trouble and heal the patient, for You are the Healer. No healing is of any avail but Yours. Healing that will leave behind no ailment." [Bukhari - Book of Medicine]

    • Narrated Aisha (Allah be pleased with her):

" During his fatal illness, the Prophet (saw) used to recite the 'Mu'auwidhat' (Surah Al-Falaq [113] and An-Naas [114]) and then blow his breath over his body. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite those two Surahs and blew my breadth over him and made him rub his body with his own hand for its blessings.

Ma'mar asked Az-Zuhri: How did the Prophet used to blow? Az-Zuhri said: He used to blow on his hands and then passed them over his face." [Bukhari - Book of Medicine]

There are many other beautiful supplications which one should learn and read in the morning and evening. Insha Allah, even if anyone reads this much (which is mentioned in this article), will be protected from the influence of Satan, Jinns and Magic by Allah's Supreme Command, provided he does it with good faith.

So in the presence of these beautiful, simple and authentic teachings, why should be anyone bothered about those who offer ridiculous, doubtful and Un-Islamic methodologies.

We Pray to Allah for His Protection from the accursed devil.
